Battersea woos the creative sector

Representatives from more than 150 creative businesses and arts institutions came to Battersea Power Station last week to hear about the area’s emergence as a centre for the creative sector.

Guests included members of leading arts colleges and universities, theatre companies, galleries, film production companies, advertising agencies, architecture practices, designers, marketing firms, casting agents, prop and costume designers, web designers and dance schools.

Dr Penelope Curtis, director of Tate Britain, was a guest of honour.

Over the last few years Battersea has attracted increasing numbers of businesses from the creative trades thanks to its low rents and ideal location close to key client bases in the West End and financial district.

High profile arrivals include Alsop Sarch, Foster + Partners Architects, Vivienne Westwood Studio, Squint Opera and Testbed1.

Last Wednesday's event (April 6), hosted by the Mayor of Wandsworth Cllr Pier McCausland, was designed to give incoming businesses an insight into the area's unique character and to explain how the vast regeneration work underway throughout Nine Elms and other parts of Battersea is helping to unlock its potential as a new creative hub.
