Bridging the Gap: South London Transport Plan
The South London sub-region is the second largest sub-region in the capital, home to 1.6 million people and providing employment to more than 720,000. The population is forecast to grow by 8% between 2006 and 2031, with particular growth in the Opportunity Areas of Croydon Metropolitan Town Centre and Vauxhall, Nine Elms, Battersea.
With a growing population, comes inevitable demand on the transport system.
Getting transport rightAn effective transport system is crucial to any region, not least the South London sub-region. A well-maintained, well-connected and efficient transport network can support successful economic development and population growth and meet social and environmental goals.
Whilst there are inevitably common goals for ensuring better transport services and provision across London, different areas have specific priorities and transport issues.
South London’s sub-regional transport plan (SRTP) was developed following two years of collaboration between the South London Boroughs, South London Partnership and other key stakeholders. It aims to address the key goals outlined in the Mayor’s Transport Strategy for London (MTS) – and show how South London can meet those aims.
It is one of five London sub-regional plans, which are designed to bridge the gap between Boroughs’ own bids for improvements and the overall London plan.
The plan is a ‘live’ document that will be responsive to changing circumstances – including the implications of the recent Spending Review.
