Building on Construction Opportunities

Monday 7th April 2008

The London Borough of Bromley, in collaboration with neighbouring Lambeth, is working closely with South London Business to pioneer the set up of ‘Build South London’ – a network designed to help local construction businesses to find out about public sector construction projects in the area and what they need to do to get a share of the work.

At an event to be held at Anerley Business Centre, small local businesses are invited to come and meet main contractors leading on Council construction projects and business support organisations that can help them to become suitably skilled and qualified to apply for some of this work.

Simon Turnage from South London Business said
‘This is the first Build South London event – we are working in partnership with major construction clients, their main contractors, local construction businesses and business support organizations, to help local construction business get more work with main contractors in South London’.

Costain plc, LB Bromley’s main contractor for Langley Park School will be at the event to talk about their new project alongside other main contractors working on public sector projects.

Dave Starling, Head of Procurement at Bromley Council commented,
‘We see this as the start of a wider network to help local construction businesses to get the business development assistance they need so they can get work in Bromley and public sector supply chains across South London. We will actively encourage both our main contractors and locally based subcontractors to take advantage of this opportunity as part of our commitment to sustainable procurement .’

Jeremy Eavis – Education Director at Costain, added
‘This gives us a great opportunity to meet some of the local businesses that can help us to deliver this exciting new build. By using more local suppliers in combination with our existing supply chain, we can make a real contribution to the local economy.’

The event, Getting Construction Work, takes place at Anerley Business Centre, Anerley Town Hall, Anerley Rd, SE20 8BD on 16th April from 1600 to 1830hrs.
This event is free to construction businesses who must register in advance by completing a booking form obtainable from Julie Harries at South London Business (0208 2561293) or to download from the event page by clicking here
