On 12th March 2009 South London Business is hosting a very special 'on the record' event with Kate Barker at the Park Plaza Hotel, County Hall. As a member of the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee, Kate Barker is one of a small group of economists who set our national interest rate each month. The Monetary Policy Committee has been notable, in recent months, for agreeing sharp reductions in interest rates, to help lessen the impact of the credit crisis in the financial sector.
This is a fascinating and unique opportunity for companies in south London to gain an insight into our economy from one of the country's most influential economists.
Kate Barker was appointed as an external member of the Monetary Policy Committee in June 2001. From 1994-2001 Kate was Chief Economic Adviser at the CBI. She was previously Chief European Economist at the Ford Motor Company (1985-1994), and before that a Research Officer at the National Institute of Economic and Social Research (1981-1985). Other previous appointments include membership of Chancellor Clarke's Panel of Independent Economic Advisers 1996-97; and she was a non-executive Director of the Yorkshire Building Society (1999-April 2001).
