GENERATIONS of American tourists visiting the capital have beaten a path between Buckingham Palace and the Tower of London.
But from now on, the far reaches of south-east London could also be on their itineraries - after Deptford and New Cross were given the New York Times' seal of approval.
The newspaper has decreed that while the suburbs may lie in “an inglorious corner of south-east London†they possess “that most heady of urban ingredients - an edge.â€
The report raves about the virtually chain store-free delights of Deptford High Street and the availability of genuine East End pie and mash for just £2.30.
Both areas are in the midst of Government-funded regeneration schemes, which may drive them upmarket.
But for now, concludes the report: “Until the well-washed masses start arriving in larger numbers, this still feels a bit like London’s Wild West.â€
Heidi Alexander, the deputy mayor of Lewisham, who lives in Deptford, said: "It’s great that the New York Times has recognised south-east London’s up-and-coming cultural corner that is Deptford.
