Many businesses are finding that attracting, motivating and holding on to good quality employees can be a challenge. This is important because unfilled vacancies, unwanted stress and absence and high levels of staff turnover can damage business competitiveness and inhibit productivity and growth – especially among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Throwing money at the problem might bring about limited and short-term relief, but usually more sustainable solutions are needed.

• So how can SMEs provide attractive and challenging job opportunities which will turn them into ‘magnet’ employers for the very best staff in the labour market?

• How can SMEs compete against their bigger and richer rivals?

• What can be done to deliver a challenging, high energy and productive working environment which generates pride and loyalty among employees without unnecessary stress?

Practitioner Workshops – Why you should attend
In response to these issues, The Work Foundation – a London-based, not-for-profit organisation – is running a series of short (2 hour) workshops on ‘Getting, Motivating and Keeping the Best Staff’, including one in Coulsdon on Friday 7
March at the Coulsdon Manor Hotel, CR5 2LL. You will get expert input from The Work Foundation, based on years of research and practical experience. You will also have the opportunity to share innovations and good practice with other
SMEs with similar issues. Designed specifically for SMEs with 50-250 employees, this invitation-only workshop is free to attend. Each participant will receive a resource pack containing practical information on a range of topics including the
role of pay in attracting and keeping staff, job-redesign, how to reduce absence and stress, how to cost staff turnover and how to get the most out of exit interviews. Where this fits in with our wider work The Government is currently interested in exploring issues to do with productivity, job retention, and sickness absence in the workplace. As part of this, The Work Foundation is being funded by Government to conduct a programme of research on the drivers of performance and productivity in SMEs, including staffing issues such as attraction, job quality, motivation and retention in a competitive labour market and an increasingly ‘knowledge-based’ economy. These workshops will help The Work Foundation shape the research and to design a survey for a later part of the study. In attending a workshop you will also be contributing to an important research project and have the option of receiving a summary of the main findings once it has been completed. We have designed the workshop to be of maximum benefit to
participants and we hope you can come.
