Mayor of Merton opens new ECO friendly business in Colliers Wood

4th July 2008

Mayor of Merton, Councillor Martin Whelton, welcomed new business, Eco Scooters Direct, to the borough, on Friday (4 July).

The Colliers Wood based company opened its doors and launched a fully eco-friendly electric scooter, which requires no car tax or petrol.

The scooter is powered by an on-board 1.500-watt lithium battery, which can be fully recharged from the mains in four to eight hours. This allows commuters to reach a top speed of 30mph, and travel for up to 50 miles. They are also able to use bus lanes and enter Central London without paying a congestion charge.

Merton Council Cabinet Member for the Environment Councillor David Simpson said: "New business is great for the borough. New eco friendly businesses are a real bonus as we roll out our Climate Change strategy for the future - a carbon zero form of transport makes for a cleaner and quieter environment.”

Mayor of Merton, Cllr Martin Whelton said: “With the price of petrol going up and a full tank costing as much as £75 it’s logical that you would want to find a cheaper solution for cheaper travel. Now that Eco Scooters Direct is in Merton we have a wonderful local ecological option."

Polish owners Beata and Martin Barek, and Michal Suszynski added: “We wanted to come to Colliers Wood as it is a gateway to the borough where there are many shops and the ever popular Merton Abbey Mills alongside the River Wandle. There is a great community spirit in the area. The council’s town centre manger Colin Tanner, local people and businesses have made us feel extremely welcome.”
