The hunt is on for Merton’s best businesses as the borough launches its inaugural business awards.

Merton Business Awards, in association with WSM Finance LLP, has been developed by Merton Council, Merton Chamber of Commerce and South London Business, in order to reward and celebrate the many dynamic and innovative businesses in the borough.
Chris Lee, Director of Environment and Regeneration, Merton Council, said: “The council’s investment in the Awards scheme reflects the value that the council places on the importance of business and the contribution that the local economy makes to the quality of life in Merton. This is just one initiative identified in the council’s new Economic Development Strategy which sets out a clear vision for the borough’s economic future.â€
The awards, which are also supported by the Career Development Group, Barclays Bank, and the Wimbledon Village Business Association as well as Morrisons Solicitors, Valpak, Lloyds TSB and Time and Leisure, were officially launched at Merton Chamber of Commerce’s AGM on Thursday May 13th and will culminate with an grand Awards ceremony at the Wimbledon All England Lawn Tennis Club on September 22nd 2010.
Richard Hunter, chairman of Wimbledon Village Business Association, which is sponsoring a customer service award to celebrate the Village shop or business which provides the highest level of customer care, said: “We are delighted that the Merton Business Awards will be recognising the value and importance of Customer Service particularly in the current climate where loyal and happy customers are a key ingredient to success.â€
He was supported by Barclays Business bank, sponsor of the Best Small Business category, who said their aim was to support businesses every step of the way.
Jenny Woodrow, business manager of Wimbledon’s Career Development Group which is sponsoring the Best Retail Business Award, added: “The awards are a fantastic platform for local retailers to be recognised for their achievements and to be celebrated in the business community. The awards will allow them to reflect on their successes and inspire them to grow further.â€
Time and Leisure said they felt privileged to sponsor the Best Commitment to the Community Award.
“We started in Wimbledon and continue to grow from our base in Merton Abbey Mills, so celebrating the achievements of other local businesses within the borough feels very natural to us.â€
Other sponsors are Morrisons Solicitors (Best Entepreneur), Valpak (Best Green Business) and Lloyds TSB Commercial (Best Medium Business).
A total of 12 different awards are up for grabs, covering businesses of all sizes; they include recognition for outstanding achievement in the fields of innovation, customer service and community commitment.
Entry is free and all finalists will have the opportunity to showcase their company and its achievements as well as receive valuable media exposure during the competition period and after the grand final.
