Revitalising Deptford

Looking forward in Deptford

Deptford has a rich history as a significant commercial location in the capital, including as home to the Henry VIII Royal Naval Dockyard. Its river frontage ensured a plentiful supply of jobs for local people and a buoyant economy. However, with the dock's closure the area suffered a sharp downturn in its fortunes from which it is still struggling to recover.

Today Deptford is a complex mix of people, cultures, and industries. Ready access to Canary Wharf and the City combined with highly competitive house prices means a growing number of affluent city workers are making Deptford their home. A thriving arts and music scene underpins the area's growing reputation as a creative hot spot. Yet well-heeled new residential developments and art studios sit alongside areas of on going and extensive deprivation. The diversity of the population is reflected in its bustling high street which supports age-old pie & mash shops alongside arty new coffee bars. Looking forward, there is significant interest in Deptford with major developments attracting over £1.5bn in investment from both the private and public sector.
