What is E-Commerce?

Electronic commerce, commonly known as e-commerce or eCommerce, consists of the buying and selling of products or services over electronic systems such as the Internet.

Developing a business over the Internet requires many of the same major activities as starting any other business.

  1. Do some basic business planning.
  2. Sort out the funding required to get your business going.
  3. You need customers.
  4. You need to market products or services

Not all products or services are well suited for selling over the internet.

But there are some features unique to e-commerce. For example, they may require a lot of face-to-face selling. They may cost a lot to ship (a primary practice in e-commerce is that customers buy products, and you ship the products to them). You need to make sure that, because your product may be advertised to the world, that you remain in control of your ideas, or "intellectual property".

Online "Store"

An "online store" is required to be an "e-tailer" (electronic retailer).

(Don't fret. You may be able to outsource, or hire, a current store to work with you.)

Your online store will need:

  • a "merchant" account, or the ability to process your customers' credit card transactions over the Internet.
  • a "secure server",

or

  • be on a computer system that ensures that customers' credit card numbers cannot readily be read by people who are not supposed to read these numbers.

and

  • Online order form that customers can complete, in order to purchase the products.

Optionally

the processing of customers' order will include processing the customers' credit card numbers right away while they're still online and connected to your Website.

Obviously,

  • You Need a Website

You need to design and promote a Website. You'll need access to expertise that can regularly design and maintain this Website for you -- and it will require ongoing attention.

Security

Why Is A SSL Certificate Required?

With booming Internet trends and fraud, most people will not submit their private details on the web unless they know that the information they provide is securely transmitted and not accessible for anyone to view.

Security Certificates

We recommend a security certificate is purchased for any server to provide encryption.

There are 2 types of security certificate applicable to the JM Safety servers.

  • Secure Certificate Extended Validation(EV)
  • SSL Web server Certificate

SSL web server Certificates - Extended Validation

An SSL Web Server Certificate with Extended Validation (EV), when displayed prominently by new browsers such as IE 7.0, creates utmost visibility of your site's security, thus instilling unparalleled buying confidence in your customers.

Extended Validation SSL provides the green address bar in the latest Web browsers to help assure your customers they are on the Web site they intend to be and that their Web transactions are secure.

Extended Validation SSL Certificates capable of up to 256-bit encryption combined with the strongest identity authentication standard available today. Boost your site visitor's confidence in your web site with the new green address bar achieved only through Extended Validation SSL authentication.

SSL web server Certificates

An SSL Web Server Certificate offers comprehensive authentication procedures (domain name and identity verification). It also offers 256, 128, 56 or 40-bit encryption depending on your client's browser capability and the cipher suite installed on your web server. This ensures that information is kept private while in transit between your web server and your clients' web browsers.
