South London Business Awards finalists chosen

24th April 2009

The RBS South London Business Awards 2009 are heading towards a successful conclusion with 52 different organisations shortlisted across eleven categories.

“This terrific result emphasises not only the strength of local business in South London, but also the sheer innovation, diversity and entrepreneurial spirit to be found here,” said Peter Pledger, chief executive of South London Business.

Launched in September at the Brit Oval the awards showcase and reward businesses ranging from one-person operations to companies employing hundreds of people; from firms whose clients are drawn from the local community to those with international customers. The finalists have been drawn from entrants across the 12 boroughs south of the Thames in London.

Barry White, Regional Director, Business & Commercial Banking for South London commented: “We are delighted to be involved in the South London Business Awards again this year and are looking forward to celebrating business success with the local business community. Winning one of these awards is a significant achievement and a great recognition for businesses that are doing well in the region”

The businesses in the running for this year’s awards cover internet-based services, restaurants, retail premises, a museum, architects and designers, events organisers, a spa, insurers, engineering and development specialists, marketing companies and plumbers. Simon Thackray, Managing Partner of Thackray Williams Solicitors LLP and judge of Best Medium sized Business category said "Recession there may be but all our finalists have demonstrated that by innovative thinking combined with effective management there are businesses in South London doing a lot more than simply surviving. Growth and increased profitability is still on the agenda for many."

The Awards are sponsored by Royal Bank of Scotland, supported by the Learning and Skills Council, solicitors Thackray Williams LLP, Tentacle Design, business to business specialists Ixion Holdings Ltd, transport organisations SWELTRAC and SELTRANS, the South London Export Club and the Guardian/News Shopper as media partner.

The winning businesses are due to be announced at a showcase ‘Oscar’ ceremony on May 20th in a lavish marquee on the pitch at Selhurst Park, home of Crystal Palace FC.
