South London businesses were in the spotlight as winners were announced at the glamorous South London Business Awards ceremony at Crystal Palace Football Club, Selhurst Park, on Monday 19 May.
Surrey County Cricket Club took the Judges’ Award for Excellence as the best all-round company that stood out from all the finalists as an exceptional business. Based at the historic Brit Oval ground the club demonstrated that it is not only a leader in the world of sport but also succeeds in delivering the highest business standards across all areas of activity.
Chairman of the judges, Peter Pledger of South London Business explained: “I was looking for a business that would be an excellent exemplar of the range and quality of businesses we have in South London. It has established a significant international reputation, increased customers and revenue, secured a world-class event and is clearly engaged with the community that surrounds its location in the Oval. It is a great example of a 21st Century business which does credit to the business community in the 12 South London boroughs and demonstrates that South London is a great place for business.?
Organised by Priory PR & Events and in its second year, the Business Award’s evening is fast becoming one of South London’s most prominent networking events in the business calendar. Guests were greeted by a stylish celebrity couple, although not the stars one typically associates with this particular football ground. The Posh and Beckham lookalikes added to the buzz as anticipation mounted before the announcement of the award winners. Beginning with a champagne reception, followed by a four-course dinner, the evening proceeded with an Oscars-style awards ceremony hosted by LBC radio’s James Max.
The finalists came from all areas of South London and represented the region’s extensive range of industry, from mobile communications to physiotherapy. Chosen by a high-powered panel of the region’s leading business figures, the companies taking the titles included Physio4Life for the Small Business Award; Syscap Ltd for Company of the Year Award; Warren House for the Customer Service Award; BioRegional Development Group for the Sustainable Business Award and CitySafe for the Innovation in Business Award.
Judge Paddy Collins of The Royal Bank of Scotland, commented on how Syscap won the panel over as the winner of the Company of the Year Award.
He said: “The business is going from strength to strength and the CEO was able to demonstrate real passion around customer service. In terms of corporate social responsibility staff were fully engaged and there was a clearly understood strategy for the business going forward. Overall a fabulous business and worthy winners?
With a 30 per cent increase in entrants this year, the quality of businesses competing for the top place in each category is a tribute to the growing level of commerce in the area. The South London Business Awards is dedicated to continuing its contribution to the development of industry by encouraging the highest possible standards and recognising success in business across South London, and looks forward to the next Business Awards programme in 2009.
